Kitano Tenmangu Shrine (北野天満宮) is located in the northwest of Kyoto. It was built over 1000 years ago, in 947 AD, by the emperor of the time to honour Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and politician who represented the middle Heian period (794-1185 AD), as well as for the nation's peace.
